Fire and Fury – A Book Publisher’s Dream

Even though I work in book publishing, there aren’t many books that I feel an immediate urge to grab. If anything, I have a list of books to read, and usually there’s not much urgency.

But that changed on Thursday as news outlets started posting highlights from the book Fire and Fury by Michael Wolff about Trump’s presidential campaign and current administration. As the site notes:

“In this explosive book, Wolff provides a wealth of new details about the chaos in the Oval Office. Among the revelations:
— What President Trump’s staff really thinks of him
— What inspired Trump to claim he was wire-tapped by President Obama
— Why FBI director James Comey was really fired
— Why chief strategist Steve Bannon and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner couldn’t be in the same room
— Who is really directing the Trump administration’s strategy in the wake of Bannon’s firing
— What the secret to communicating with Trump is
— What the Trump administration has in common with the movie The Producers”

Now, this was exciting enough information, but the real catalyst catching my attention of course was that Trump himself was sending out a flurry of Tweets discrediting the book. So of course I just to read it. The publisher announced they were releasing the book early because of massive interest, so on Friday afternoon, I went to a local B&N but they were sold out. I put on a hold on a copy with another B&N closer to my home. But decided to try one more avenue … a local indie! I managed to reserve copies on Book Culture’s web site and finally got my hands on a physical copy at 8pm that night.

So many publishers, including my company, are publishing books about Trump, and I can say that of the books that have been released in the past year, i don’t think any have been so anticipated. I was even reading that a billionaire planned to buy and send a copy to every member of Congress. I wish I could say there was a way to replicate the excitement and purchasing power seen from this book, but that’s like going into a brainstorming meeting when the agenda is to come up with a hashtag that will go viral.

I’ll be keeping my eyes out for how people are responding to the book overall, and of course, to see how Trump and his team continue to respond.

If you’ve read the book, or plan to, please share your thoughts below!
